‘Dancing With the Stars’: Danke Wayne

By Denette Wilford

The fans of Mr. Las Vegas finally couldn’t take it anymore

DWTS, ABC
Buh Bye Wayne

Before the season even started, I thought that Wayne Newton would be pretty good. This show, I thought, was tailor-made for someone like him, a true entertainer. Boy, was I wrong. He never looked comfortable, he moved stiffly and he never improved as the weeks passed. Considering the past competitors who were near or around his age, and the fact that this season’s competition is the best yet, he never stood a chance.

On to the remaining dancers. Monday was filled with great performances and the judges were more generous than in weeks past. But I’ve decided to rank the dancers myself so here goes:

1. Sabrina Bryan
The Cheetah Girl not only brings energy and sass to the dance floor but she’s been as close to perfection as one can get every time. She is easily the best one out there.

2. Helio Castroneves
He shocks me every week. I mean, he races cars for a living, for Pete’s sake! But with his adorable smile, his goofy nature, and the fact that he has picked up everything quite easily, the two-time Indy winner could give Sabrina a run at the title, especially with Julianne by his side.

3. Mel B.
Her partnership with Maksim is fun to watch… not in that smokin’ hot way that I thought he and Laila had last season… more like brother and sister. She has the talent, likability and the desire… I just don’t know if it’s enough to beat the Cheetah Girl.

4. Jennie Garth
She overcame adversity (the fall last week) and bounced back with a vengeance. This was easily her best dance of the season… most likely because she had something to prove. She is slowly gaining confidence and is finally starting to have fun out there.

5. Jane Seymour
After the passing of her mother last week, she could have easily turned her dance shoes in. But she’s a trooper and continued, in honour of her long-suffering mum, who inspired Jane to do the show. I hope she knows that she, is now, the inspiration.

6. Marie Osmond
I wasn’t super excited about her before but this crazy lady has won me over with her enthusiasm and flair for the dramatic. Plus, she’s getting better and better and is becoming, in her own right, a force to be reckoned with.

7. Cameron Mathison
He’s the second best guy and has the drive, dedication and enormous fan base that should keep him around for several more weeks.

8. Mark Cuban
I know I’m in the minority but I actually like the billionaire. His determination is admirable and I think he dances better than the judges are giving him credit for.

9. Floyd Mayweather
The boxer has crazy energy and passion for competition, but he needs to work on his technique if he wants to stay in the ring.

Next week, they’re tackling the Paso Doble and the Viennese waltz. Can’t wait.
