A Britney-Sanjaya duet in works?

By Melissa Hank

The fallen pop princess and the mild-mannered ‘Idol’ could be a match made in musical heaven

Britney Spears loves the Sanj

Right about now, the musical gods must be weeping – or at least giggling with glee.

Rumour has it Britney Spears wants to record a duet with recent American Idol castoff Sanjaya Malakar. Sigh. So many jokes, so little time.

According to a report set to appear in Star Magazine, Spears is a big fan of the Sanj. Apparently, the Idol’s sunny smile brightened up her darkest days, or some such lame metaphor.

“Britney started watching American Idol when she was in rehab,” said a source. “She became a huge Sanjaya fan and thinks the two of them can make beautiful music together.”

The pairing is certainly possible. Fresh from his appearance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this weekend (seriously, what was that?), Malakar can pretty much take whatever project he chooses – assuming he can get around his Idol contract.

As for Spears, she’s desperate to reclaim her pop princess status. The source told Star she wants to take advantage of Malakar’s considerable pre-teen fan base to put her back at the top of the charts. Word has it, she’s already had her people contact his people.

The idea of a Britney-Sanjaya duet is so delicious, we compiled this list of the Top 5 duets we’re salivating for the pair to recreate.

1. “U Got the Look” by Prince and Sheena Easton she’s shockingly bald, he’s known for wacky hairdos. It’s an ode to follicular PR!

2. “(Just Like) Starting Over” by John Lennon and Yoko Ono with Spears on the comeback trail and Malakar starting his post-Idol journey, it’s a salute to new beginnings.

3. “Onion Song” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell because they both kind of make you want to cry.

4. “Where is the Love” by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway – he’s accused of singing off-key, she’s condemned for flashing her lady bits. The two just can’t catch a break.

5. “Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel – let’s just say it’s more of a gentle suggestion rather than a song request.

What do you think? Can you think of other tunes that could be perfect for Spears and Malakar? Let me know at Melissa@tvguide.ca.
